<lead><![CDATA[Danny Care has revealed that Martin Johnson encouraged him to go bungee jumping at the World Cup as long ago as last year. Johnson came in for heavy criticism for allowing his England players to indulge in the extreme sport after struggling to beat Argentina. But Care (below), robbed of his place at the tournament by a broken toe, has provided testimony that shows it was always part of Johnson's grand plan.]]></lead>
<text><![CDATA["I can remember Johnno about a year and a half ago saying to me that when we go to New Zealand he wants the boys to do a bungee jump," said the scrum-half. "He wanted us to experience something like that. What are they meant to do, sit in their room and chill in the hotel? You're out in another part of the world. It's the World Cup, it's special."You've got to do special things to one, keep your sanity, and two, experience other things."Johnson has since had to defend his decision against criticism that it shows the players are not focused on the job at hand.Their tame performance against Georgia last weekend, coming only days after the bungee jumps and boozy 'dwarf-throwing' night, did not help his case.Nor did the back injury suffered by Nick Easter within days of his Queenstown leap (below). He will learn in the next 48 hours whether his World Cup is over."If they would have won by 50 points and then done a bungee jump, everyone would be saying it's fine," Care told Sportvibe. "It's just the fact that they didn't have a great performance. But it's a long old tournament."Care's support for Johnson (below) was echoed here by Lewis Moody ahead of the captain leading England into their clash with Romania this morning."Johnno's been incredible," said the flanker. "The strides that we have made as a team since he took over have been clear for all to see."Over the years the form, and the continuity of form we've had, has all been down to his leadership and the team he's put together. "I don't just mean the team on the pitch but behind the scenes as well. I feel the prospect of England continuing to be successful is great with him at the helm."Johnson's contract expires at the end of the tournament and will welcome the vote of confidence after a week spent firefighting for Mike Tindall. He insists he is happy to leave a question mark over his England future until he gets home and sits down with his RFU employers - even though the chief executive he agreed to talk to, John Steele, has since been ousted. But Johnson dropped a heavy hint that he won't walk away, saying: "I've really enjoyed it."Like any job with stresses, it has it's moments either way. We've had some things to deal with and we've dealt with them and moved on."That's what World Cups are about - pressure. Handling it, dealing with it, reacting to it the right way hopefully. It's what you get into."What Johnson has not had to deal with, however, are the midweek fixtures which have been imposed on the smaller nations here.Scotland and Lions team doctor James Robson stuck his head above the parapet last night to brand two Test matches in four days as "almost an impossible task".He said: "From my point of view, from a medical point of view, I would prefer that we didn't have a four-day turnaround."We've done one and I know that the guys that played in both those games, for a day or two, really couldn't do anything."We've often argued what is the optimum time to play a Test match and then return for training and we find the players are not able to train adequately for about three to four days."To my mind, and certainly it would appear to many people's minds, trying to actually play one international and then four days' later play another international is almost an impossible task."These are powerful views from a globally respected man and will please Gloucester's Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu (above) who flew into a rage after Samoa were made to play Wales on three days rest while the Welsh got seven."IRB stop exploiting my people," he tweeted. "All we ask is fairness. If they get a week, give us a week. Simple."]]></text>
